Wild land Fire Awareness: Outdoor activities

Laredo, TX, December 27, 2007:
The Laredo Fire Department urges citizens to take extra precautions this year to avoid the threat of wild fires. High winds and dry conditions can set the stage for potentially severe fires.
An estimated 90 percent of all Texas wildfires are caused by human activity. The greatest causes are fireworks, discarded cigarettes and burning embers are blown into the air. Laredoans can help prevent fire if we:
· Avoid burning trash. This is not permitted by City ordinance
· Do not use fireworks during the holidays
· If you smoke in your car, extinguish cigarettes in vehicle ashtrays. Never toss a cigarette out of a car window, and don’t put cigarettes out on the ground
· Be careful when pulling off a road or driving into a field
· Keep a fire extinguisher and water handy when working outdoors with equipment that gets hot, or involves sparks, such as welding equipment. Water down outdoor work areas in advance if possible.
On behalf of the Laredo Fire department, we want to thank you for your cooperation and we wish you a safe and Happy New Year.

Wild land fires plague city

Laredo, TX, December 27, 2007:
Farm and ranch families and citizens living in rural areas can help protect their property during potentially severe wildfire seasons by taking precautions before wild land fire breaks out. The Laredo Fire Department recommends clearing a 30-to50 foot space around homes and other buildings. Keep grass mowed down whether it is dormant or still green.
Clear brush from areas between trees. Prune any lower branches. Make sure the areas beneath utility lines are clear of brush, tall grass and trees in order to protect essential services. Make sure your home address, with both the house number and street name, is clearly visible. Other wild land fire safety tips include the following:
· Clear vegetation between buildings and nearby fields or woodlands to create an area that does not feed the fire. Clear areas along the roadways.
· Keep mufflers and spark arresters on agricultural equipment in proper working order.
· Monitor hay-bailing operations closely. Check for hot bearings or hay caught in rollers. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
· Watch out for sparks when using welding equipment to build fences or repair equipment.
· Avoid driving or parking vehicles in grassy areas where tall, dry grass can come into contact with hot pollution control equipment (mufflers) under your vehicle.
· Postpone outdoor burning until your areas greens up. Check to see if a burn ban is in effect with the Fire Department.
On behalf of the Laredo Fire department, we want to thank you for your cooperation and we wish you a safe and Happy New Year.
